Fire service releases statement over online claims after major fire
Shops in Kirkby-in-Ashfield were destroyed in the incident
Nottinghamshire’s fire service has released a statement over “inaccurate claims” following a major fire in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
Lockdown Tackle and Bait and Cabourns Carpentry were among the businesses destroyed during the blaze at the Urban Road Business Park on Friday evening, June 28.
Firefighters from Ashfield Fire Station were among the crews sent to the scene at 10pm on Friday, with officials working through the night to bring the fire under control.
Following the fire, the owners of Lockdown Tackle and Bait said: “Our livelihood went up in flames, and we are heartbroken by this unexpected tragedy.”
An investigation is now under way into the incident.
Officials at Ashfield Fire Station released a statement “extending their thoughts” to all individuals affected by the incident.
They have also addressed rumours that have circulated online about the circumstances surrounding the incident and actions during it.
A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that some of the comments being made are inaccurate.
“All the four fire engines that arrived at this incident had full tanks and there were no hydrants covered with tarmac.
“Additionally, we also sent a water bowser with a large capacity for carrying water to this incident.
“We’d also like to make clear that the fire did not start in the fishing tackle shop, but a neighbouring unit.
“People should be reassured that our crews remain ready, willing and able, to respond to incidents around the county. They are all trained at a high standard, that enables us to keep Nottinghamshire safe.
“Following this incident, we will be having an increased presence in the local area for further community reassurance.”
A GoFundMe page has been set up by the team behind Cabourns Carpentry following the fire and it has already raised thousands of pounds. You can view that story in our latest newsletter.
